Research at the Institute of Biomedicine

The research activities at the Institue are many and diverse, but primarily fall into either of four key areas:

  • Infection and Immunology
  • Cancer and Stem Cell Biology
  • Genetics and Molecular Medicine or
  • Cell and Molecular Biology, including Glycobiology.

Our research environment is further strengthened by many cross-interactions between these areas – for instance, groups combine cancer research with immunology/inflammation or genetics. The Institute actively strives to create environments for translational research, promoting constellations of pre-clinical and clinical groups. A prominent example of such research collaboration is the Sahlgrenska Cancer Center, which is also part of a government-supported strategic cancer research program.

The research groups at the Institute obtain a large proportion of their research funds from competitive grants from foundations in Sweden, the EU and other countries. Private foundations and donors also generously support research at the institute. From these sources, a number of major strategic grants have recently been awarded to researchers within the Institute.

In close connection to our research premises, the Sahlgrenska Academy has established a number of core facilities which provide our scientists with state of the art technology in areas such as imaging, proteomics, genomics, bioinformatics and mouse genetics.

The various research groups and their projects are presented on the research pages of the respective

De olika forskargrupperna och deras projekt presenteras på respektive avdelnings forskarsida:
