Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common human genetic disease and is caused by defect chloride channels in the epithelial cells which gives a viscous mucus in the lungs and in the gastrointestinal tract. Lung infections is the most important reason for a lower life expectancy in CF patients. Their lungs are often colonised and infected by for example Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans and Exophiala dermatitidis. Development of more resistant strains of these bacteria and fungi is troublesome and in many cases the patient experiences lifelong colonisation by micro-organisms in spite of extensive antibiotic treatment. Chronic colonisation causes permanent inflammation and lung injuries. Lung transplantation has lengthened the lives of the patients.
In the project, S. aureus, P.aeruginosa, Mycobacterium abscessus and E. dermatitidis will be studied by new molecular-biological methods.
The immunological response among CF-patients to different microbes will be compared to age-matched controls to be able find contributing reasons to why some CF-patients are more often infected chronically by some bacterial species and fungi. The aim is to obtain better strategies for treatment and to diminish the amount of infections and mitigate the effect of these.
